How to track an illness with episodes

An episode groups everything you log during one illness: doses, temperatures and symptoms. You can see the whole illness on one screen and share it with your pediatrician. Episodes are on the Episodes tab of your child's screen.

Start an episode

  1. Open your child and tap the Episodes tab.
  2. Tap Start an episode.
  3. Give it a Name if you like, for example "Flu" or "Ear infection". If you leave it blank, Fever Whiz names it "Illness" with the start date.
  4. Set When did symptoms start? You can pick any day in the last year.
  5. Add a Diagnosis and Notes if you have them.
  6. Tap Save.

Each child can have one ongoing episode at a time. If one is already ongoing, Fever Whiz offers to open it instead.

Let Fever Whiz suggest one

You don't have to remember to start an episode. When your recent logs look like your child may be unwell, a Coming down with something? card appears on the Activities tab.

  • Tap Start episode to open the form with the start date already filled in.
  • Tap Not now to hide the card.

The card appears when you log two or more symptoms or temperatures of 38.0 °C (100.4 °F) or higher within 48 hours, or one such temperature in the last 24 hours. Doses alone never bring it up.

What belongs to an episode

Every activity logged between the episode's start and end is part of it, including activities logged by other caregivers. You don't need to tag anything. If you change the episode's dates, the activities inside it update on their own.

If two episodes overlap, activities in the overlap count in both.

See an episode

Tap an episode on the Episodes tab to open it. You'll see:

  • Days, Peak temp, Doses and Symptoms at the top
  • A Fever curve
  • Doses given, with each medication
  • Symptoms
  • A Timeline of every activity in the episode, where you can edit or delete an activity

While an episode is ongoing, the Activities tab also shows it in a banner with the day, the highest temperature and the number of doses.

End an episode

When your child is better, open the episode and tap Mark as ended. The end time is set to now.

Fever Whiz can also remind you. When nothing new has been logged for an ongoing episode for 72 hours, a Feeling better? card appears on the Activities tab. Tap Mark as ended to end the episode at the last dose, symptom or temperature you logged, or Not now to keep it going.

Edit or delete an episode

  • Edit: Open the episode and tap the pencil icon. You can change the name, dates, diagnosis and notes. Once an episode has ended, you can also change When did it end?
  • Delete: Open the episode and tap the trash icon. This deletes the episode only. Your logged activities are not affected.

An ended episode can't be reopened. If your child gets sick again, start a new episode.

Share an episode with your pediatrician

Open the episode and tap the share icon. The report opens already set to the episode's dates. See How to share a health report with your pediatrician.

Troubleshooting

  • "An episode is already ongoing": Your child already has an open episode. Open it, or end it first with Mark as ended.
  • "These dates overlap another episode. Activities in the overlap will count in both.": This is only a warning. You can still save, or change the dates so the episodes don't overlap.
  • "The end must be after the start": Pick an end date and time later than When did symptoms start?
  • An activity is missing from the episode: Check its date and time. It must fall between the episode's start and end.
  • The suggestion card doesn't appear: It only shows on the Activities tab, and not while an episode is already ongoing. After you tap Not now, the card stays hidden on that phone for this illness. It comes back if your child gets sick again after a break of more than 48 hours.
  • The Feeling better? card came back after I tapped Not now: It returns when you log something new and then 72 more hours pass with nothing else logged. Tap Mark as ended if your child is better.
